Restore Your Capacity with Nadi Shodhana Breathwork

(Alternate Nostril Breathing)

This month inside Basecamp, we’re exploring capacity—what drains it, what restores it, and how to build strength from a steady foundation.

One of my favorite tools for restoring nervous system balance is a simple breath practice called Nadi Shodhana, or alternate nostril breathing.

It’s gentle.
It’s quiet.
And it works quickly to shift you from scattered or overstimulated into centered and steady.

What is Nadi Shodhana?

Nadi Shodhana translates to “channel cleansing.”
This practice balances the left and right sides of the brain and nervous system—supporting a smooth, grounded flow of energy and awareness.

Benefits of Nadi Shodhana:

  • Calms the mind and body

  • Reduces anxiety and stress

  • Balances the sympathetic (fight/flight) and parasympathetic (rest/digest) nervous systems

  • Supports respiratory health

  • Increases focus and mental clarity

  • Promotes emotional regulation and grounded energy

Contraindications:

While Nadi Shodhana is gentle and generally safe, please avoid or modify if:

  • You’re congested in both nostrils (practice with visualization or pause until clear)

  • You feel dizzy, lightheaded, or anxious—pause and return to natural breathing

  • You’re in a phase of active trauma response or overwhelm—go slowly or choose another grounding tool

  • Always listen to your body and consult with a healthcare provider if unsure

No props needed—just a few minutes to pause, breathe, and come home to yourself.

When capacity feels out of reach, your breath can be a bridge back.

You're doing such good work—keep showing up gently.
